Women are an indispensable element for the progress of any society. One can make an estimation of the progress of society by looking at the women of the society. Understanding the importance of upliftment of the women community all over the globe the 8th March is celebrated as International Women’s Day (IWD).

International Women’s Day History

The International women’s day was earlier known as  National Woman’s Day and it was observed in the United States on 28 February 1909 for the first time. The Socialist Party of America designated this day in honour of the female garment workers.  Later the year of 1913-1914 the first International women’s day was celebrated on 8th March as a peace movement for protesting World War I. In the year of 1975, The United Nation officially declared this day as International Women’s Day.

Every year the women’s day is observed with a theme. The theme of women’s day 2019 is – “Think equal, build smart, innovate for change”.  The campaign theme of this women’s day is #BalanceforBetter.

The women empowerment is the motive behind observing this day. This year the need equality of women in every aspect of life has been chosen as the theme for the campaign. The theme of 2019 will focus on innovative ways to establish gender equality in the areas of social protection and public services.

How to Make the Day Special

The observation of international women’s day is significant for both males and females. The presence and contributions of women at home, work or society has to be celebrated on this specific day. Irrespective of your gender, let step ahead to celebrate this day with some unique yet exciting ways. Here are some ideas to observe this day-

1. #BalanceforBetter

The campaign theme itself says a lot that can be done to observe the women’s day. The balance or equal occupancy is not something that has to be implemented only in the world out of the surroundings of your home. This women’s day let’s initiate to create a balance between both the genders by giving equal dignity to both genders at our homes.

2. Celebrating IWD at the Workplace

Celebrate IWD at the workplace can be the next great idea to observe the women’s day. A number of events can be organised by the office management team to make this day special for the female employees. Initiating an IWD themed morning tea or shared lunch, Sending wishing emails or sharing a blog post, holding seminar etc can be done to encourage the women employees.

3. Join a Rally

Joining a rally or a march organised for women awareness can be a way to doing your part towards the upliftment of the female community of your society. Taking out rallies, women awareness programme, street play etc. are some of the common practices of celebrating women’s day all over the world. You can take part in any of them irrespective of being a male or female.

4. Make Women Around You Feel Good

Many of us may not be able to take a very big step towards the progress of the women community but all of us can do our bit by making the women around us feel better. It may be your mother, sister, wife, girlfriend or your bestie, we can thank them for their contribution to our lives. Giving gifts, taking them to the places they like or promising them to be gentle towards them and respecting their decisions are some of the things one can do to make the women’s day special.

Every year 8th March is celebrated as International Women’s Day to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women across the globe. But the observation never ends with one day celebration. Different campaigns are run throughout the year to empower the women of the society.  This day is celebrated in almost all nations of the globe.
